Tom Ford Eye Color Quad 02 Emerald Lust Review, Swatches, EOTD

Emerald Lust is the other new eyeshadow palette recently released by Tom Ford. It's an iridescent mixture of aquatic blues and greens,  with two glittery shades and no mattes. Despite the dramatic ad for this palette, I found it to be very wearable on a daily bases. Although the colors are bright and shimmery, they're not overly saturated and doesn't scream "look at me" on the eyes.

A close-up under natural indoor lighting. The top two shades have very fine silvery
glitters in them. Although
the glitters in these new palettes are very small comparing to last year's version, they do add a kick to the shimmery eyeshadows.

Macro of the upper left shade. This is not a stark white that looks ridiculous on the face. It does let some skin color show through and the result is a lightened shimmery area with small specks of silvery glitter.

The upper right shade is a green biased towards blue. It is greener than the lower left shade below. This one also has fine glitters in it. Applies like an iridescent green with small specks of silvery glitter.

The lower left shade is a blue biased towards green. It has iridescent shimmer but no glitter.

The last shade is a black blue, also iridescent but has no glitter. It's a beautiful eyeliner shade.

Arm swatches on UDPP. As you can see, the white shade is not too dramatic as an highlight. The first two shades are more shimmery due to the fine glitter particles in them. All the shades apply smoothly and evenly.

Comparing to some similar shades in my stash.
1) The white shade in Emerald Lust is more shimmery than Nars Abyssinia and lighter in color than theBalm Devilish Danielle.
2) The glittery green shade is more green than Make Up For Ever Baked in Lagoon and Urban Decay Flipside.
3) The iridescent blue shade in Emerald Lust is more subdued and sheerer than UD Deep End.
4) The blue black shade is not as blue as UD Evidence or the blue in Stila Precious Pearl Palette. I also swatched Nars Night Flight next to these but that was no comparison. Night Flight is nearly all black with very little blue.

Here is a look done with TF Emerald Lust, Guerlain Rose Aux Joues in 02 Chic Pink, and TF Lip Color in Wild Ginger.

The pigmentation is slightly sheer and the resulting look is much more wearable comparing to the average shades in this color range. The shimmeriness/glitteriness, however, is quite strong. If you like a bit of sparkle on the eyes, you will love that upper right green shade. It is so gorgeous on the eyes. My camera doesn't do it justice, it's much more shimmery in person.

I lined the eyes with UD Binge first, then pressed the blue-black shade on top of it and the color is very saturated, more so than with UD Binge alone.

See the sparkles around the lower eyelash line? Those are from the glittery green shade, which I placed outside the blue.

For the blush, I chose the coral shade in  Guarlain's new duo blush, Chic Pink. It's very similar to Nars Orgasm but minus the strong golden shimmers and more biased towards orange.

For the lip color, I chose Tom Ford Wild Ginger, a red with barely detectable orange. Although emerald green and warm red are both bold colors and one would think that they probably fight for attention on the face. These two, however, work in harmony. The orange-red lips make the emerald eyes more vibrant and the sheer colored eyes yields to the opaque red lips just enough that the order of attention clearly goes to the lips first, then the eyes and lastly the cheeks.

Here I messed up a little by enlarging the colored area on the upper lid, this was meant for my own reference but I forgot to take these pictures before I started playing around. The eyes should have been more subtle, and not overpowering the lips. Anyways, you can still see that the blue-green eye makeup and orange-red lips are not that absurd together, in fact, they can play off of each other quite well.

Overall, Tom Ford Emerald Lust is a great choice for people who want a blue-green palette for everyday use. It won't give you supper pigmented looks for clubbing or Halloween but dinner parties, social gatherings and creative working environments are perfect occasions for wearing this palette.

  1. The girl at the german Tom Ford counter has a make up made with this palette - she looked geourgous, but not "wearable" - but not yours, it lookes great and not too much. Thank you for reviewing this.

P.S. I shoud stop reading your blog, it's getting expensive :-)

    1. Haha, thanks, I'm glad you like it :)

I actually don't find this palette to be all that pigmented, but then again I'm used to the super pigmented stuff from Urban Decay and Nars. This goes for a different kind of look, so the slight sheerness is desirable.
